You pick up the vape, drag, inhale and enjoy the effects. Done, right? That’s vaping. Easy as that. Well, not quite. Granted, that’s true to a degree, but there’s much more to it than that. There are actually two main types of vaping technique – mouth-to-lung and direct-to-lung. So which one do YOU use?
What is mouth-to-lung vaping?
If you’re an ex-smoker, you probably already have the mouth-to-lung technique nailed to a tee. This is exactly how you would smoke a cigarette – drawing the smoke into the mouth then taking a secondary inhale to transport it into the lungs. This is exactly the same for mouth-to-lung vaping.
How does it compare to direct-to-lung vaping?
Direct-to-lung vaping, on the other hand, is usually associated with sub ohm vaping. This is when the vapour is inhaled directly into the lungs and then exhaled. These dedicated vaping devices often need a greater airflow to provide a cooling function for the vape, therefore they are designed to allow more air over the coil.
You know when you’re walking down the street and you see someone exhale a mammoth cloud of vapour? They’re likely direct-to-lung vaping.
Stay tuned for the release of a dedicated blog on direct-to-lung vaping shortly!
What are the benefits of mouth-to-lung vaping?
One of the main benefits as mentioned above is the ability to mimic the cigarette smoking technique. This is undoubtedly the best way to give up smoking and has helped many people transition smoothly into vaping.
With mouth-to-lung vaping, you can also replicate the “throat hit” experienced when smoking a cigarette. A combination of factors, which include higher Propylene Glycol (PG) levels, less air drawn over the vape’s coil and the above inhaling technique, all lead to this familiar, welcome feeling!
That’s not the only benefit of using e-liquids with a higher PG when mouth-to-lung vaping. They can also deliver great flavour, ensuring the taste is more pronounced and able to be savoured better. After all, there are no taste buds in your lungs are there!?
Finally, one of the other main benefits is that your e-liquid will last longer than direct-to-lung vaping, as less is used in each puff. This in turn will save money and trips to the vape shop or online store. Great news for your bank account!
How do you mouth-to-lung vape?
As we mentioned before, it’s basically the same action as smoking a cigarette. If you’ve got a multi-functional device capable of both mouth-to-lung and direct-to-lung vaping, you’ll need to alter the setting to ensure airflow is partially restricted. From here, take a steady drag into the mouth just like you would with a cigarette. Briefly pause with the vapour in your mouth and inhale into the lungs before exhaling. Job done!
What are the best e-liquids for mouth-to-lung vaping?
One of the benefits of mouth-to-lung vaping is the great flavour and satisfactory throat high users get when using e-liquids with a high PG ratio. So, surprise surprise, you won’t find it a shock that the best e-liquids for this technique are those with high levels of Propylene Glycol! Sixlicks Truth or Pear or Riot Squad’s Rich Black Grape are good examples.
Alternatively, did you know you could use Nic Salts? (Discover more about Nic Salts in our blog here). Many vapers believe they provide a quicker, more intense nicotine hit. As they usually come in higher doses, they’re more suitable for mouth-to-lung than direct-to-lung vaping. An example would be Yeti’s Grape which you can find at our online store.
Of course, everybody has different needs when it comes to the amount of nicotine they wish to consume. For those who have recently quit smoking, they may well require stronger levels of nicotine. High PG e-liquids and Nic Salts offer a great way to vape in accordance with your nicotine needs.
What device do I need for mouth-to-lung vaping?
Mouth-to-lung vaping doesn’t require low resistance or high wattage machines, so pretty much any modern vaping mod will do. Traditionally, you’d use a single coil of around 1.2Ω, which would be the optimal level. However, as the market has continued to develop over time, lower resistance coils are now being manufactured as low as 0.5Ω, depending on the mod. To avoid any confusion, these are often clearly labelled as MTL coils. A great example is the 0.8 Ohm DC MTL coil in the Smok RPM40 Replacement Coils kit.
So there you go, everything you need to know about mouth-to-lung vaping. For smokers looking to leave tobacco and move into the world of vaping, it’s an ideal way to transition. Ultimately, like anything in life, you need to do what’s right for you. As long as you’re getting enjoyment and satisfaction from your vape, that is the main thing.
